Why did she keep pressing him for being all for family and here in their town? He tried hard not to snap, he was sick of hearing it. Sure, at times he missed home, yet he loved his job.

"How about we take a break?"

The music in the background turned to a slow Christmas song. Brad stood, reaching out his hand to her. The bewildered look on her face had him wondering if he'd imagined a connection between them. She placed her hand in his, as tingles rocketed through his body.

He pulled her closer and began swaying. The way she molded into him didn't go unnoticed to him. Destiny took a sharp breath in. Her hand was on his shoulder, and the heat simmered. She didn't glance away and with those brown eyes, he'd always gotten lost in them. Old feelings rose to the surface and he wasn't sure he wanted to push them away again. The rational side of his brain told him it was too soon from his engagement, and the other side said go for it. A slim chance anything would come of it, and besides, as soon as she got a chance she'd be gone.

What harm would come from a Christmas romance?

"Why did you want to stop and dance?" So many questions in her eyes and he wasn't sure he'd be able to answer them.

He stroked her back up and down. His heart was thudding against his chest, hard and out of control. The way his mouth went dry he wasn't sure he'd be able to answer her. Nerves bunched all over him, and yet she shot small fires throughout his body. If he'd not been hyperaware of her, he'd never have felt her hand shake. He offered her a reassuring smile, not even sure what caused him to want to dance.

"The way the fireplace crackled in your eyes made me want to get a closer look." He chuckled, wanting to run in the other direction. Worst pick-up line goes to him. Always. In school, people thought he had all the moves. Wrong. He never knew what to say, and with Destiny, it felt like his tongue-tied even more. "No, I wanted to dance to this song. Remember at the Christmas dance?" He didn't want to remind her of the pain, and yet he wanted an answer to why.

She stopped, took a step back, her mouth forming an O shape. Gosh, he regretted the loss of her touch. He didn't pull her back, even though every part of him wanted to. Wanted to have her so close, to kiss her lips. She nodded, and a few strands fell in her face. So beautiful. Brad tucked the strands behind her ear, stroking her cheek.

"Yes. How I got left on the floor."

Pain stabbed his chest at the memory. It should have been a happy night for her and yet the boy she went with broke up with her, leaving her standing there in front of everyone, tears streaming down her face.
